英語が書けるようになりたいと思う方は、分野を問わず、まずはこの本の５００文を暗記して、いつでも書けるようにしてほしい。騙されたと思って、これだけやってみる期間を作っていただきたい。騙されていなかったことに気づくはずである。安直な甘い言葉の本をいくら読んでも仕方ない、こういった本を廃刊しない出版社にも敬意を表したい。

筆者曰く、「大学受験に必要な最小限度の知識と技術を伝授するということ
を唯一に目標としないで、もっと広い見地に立ち、読者に英語的なものの
考え方を身につけてもらい、なんとか達意の英文のが書けるようになって
いただくため内容に考慮をはらった」一冊。構成は

■予備編（P.1〜P.126）
500文の暗誦用例文（と練習問題489文）の合計989文
■基礎編（P.127〜P.314）
1.主語について、2.動詞について、3.修飾語について、4.翻訳について
■応用編（P.315〜P.372）
■INDEX（P.372〜P.396）

全編素晴らしいの一言に尽きるが、割かれているページ数からも明らか
である通り、本書の肝は「基礎編」にある。「1.主語について」では冒頭
では「主語のとり方一つで文全体の姿が決まる」という点を、同じ和文
を違う主語＋構文の英文で詳述。「2.動詞について」では、「主語が
定まったら次はそれに合わせて適当な動詞を考えねばならぬ」「この名詞
にはこんな動詞という一定の結びつきに注意しながら」選ぶ事を、
「3.修飾語について」では、「根幹になる事を先に言って、細部の枝葉に
当たる部分はあとから言い添える」事を示す。

一部の意欲のある受験生の間では「予備編」の500例文の暗誦が人気のよう
であるが、通読をせずに500例文だけを切り離す勉強方には余り意味がない
ような気がする。現在では「基本英文700選」等類書は幾らでもあるので、
自分に合った類書を仕上げる事を勧める。また、ビジネスライティング等
の実務向きではないとの意見も散見されるが、それは的外れな指摘だろう。
本書はどのような「和文英訳」にも益する一冊だ。

結論として、大学生や社会人が、前著「英文構成法」を読み終えてから、
英文作成能力の完成段階として本書に進むのが好ましい。「文法的に
正しい英文を書くには『いかなる 語をいかに配置したらよいか』」を
説く「英文構成法」と「達意の英文を書けるように」なる方法を説く本書は、
両者が相互の補完し合うものである。

大学受験用ですが、英作文が軽視されがちな最近の受験では、使用する学生は少ないのではないでしょうか。しかし、本格的な英語をじっくり身につけたい人には、ぜひ読んでもらいたい本です。英語を使う機会のある中高年の方が、学生時代を思い出して購入しているようです。前半の例文の５００を覚え、後半は鑑賞しましょう。
