走行中の車から捨てられた一匹の犬。どんなに追いかけても走り去る車に追いつくことはできない。通るすぎていく車に、もしや飼い主が乗っていはしまいかと犬は駆ける。期待の表情がやがて諦めに変わり、犬は浜辺を、町をさまよい歩く。

海岸で見つけた人影に心を震わせ、主人でないことを知って空に向かって遠吠えする姿は涙を誘う。人に追い払われながらとぼとぼと町を歩く姿もしかり。

文章の全くない、素朴なデッサンだけの絵本だが、犬の表情や感情が痛いまでに伝わってきて、見る者の心を熱くする。

わたしはこの本でガブリエル・バンサンと出会いました。

力強い絵だけで見せていく才能に驚きました。
犬の表情がほんとうにすばらしいし、なにも描かれていない白紙の空間にすら、メッセージがこめられれいるかのようでした。

とっても悲しくなるお話ですが、だからこそ最後はほっとして、感動してしまいます。

大人の方も、お子さんも、ぜひ読んでいただきたいです。

バンサンの作品では、ほかには「たまご」と「くまのアーネストおじさん」のシリーズをおすすめします。

感動できるから読んでごらん、などといって人に気安く薦めるものとはまるで違う種類の作品でした。これほど心がひりひりした本は（絵本のみならず）初めてです。作者の絵の見事さは、何万の言葉を費やすよりも雄弁にこの犬の孤独を語りかけます。それに耳をすますのは勇気がいります。絵本の中に飛び込んで抱きしめてやりたくなりました。この本をお子さんと読まれるお母さん、お父さんはその後、どんなことをお話するのだろうか。子どものいない私は、そんなことがちょっと気になったりしました。とても優れた本ですね、辛いですけど。
