高校生まで自分の年齢しか数えられなかった（とブルースの母親が言っている）ブルースはワシントン大学の心理学部哲学科に進学し、図書館にある古今東西の哲学書を読破したという。そし学部生３年生の時には、教授に代わり哲学の授業の代行まで行っている。

彼の強さは外見的な物だけでなく、内面的に強固な思想によってもたらされていることがとても理解できる一冊。

強固な思想ではあるが、中身は禅の影響を大きく受けており、とても柔軟でしなやかな思想であるため、日本人ならすんなりと理解できることだろう。

これ一冊で何冊もの哲学書のエッセンスが含まれている。
人生、武道、家族、死、神・・・。
その考えをブルースは映画の中で表現していること自体が、驚異であるといえよう。

３２歳という私と同じ年齢の人間がここまで考えているということ自体、
私にはとても影響力を持っている一冊。
ぜひ誰にでも読んで欲しい。

いくつか禅と武道に関する本を読んできましたが、わずか三十二歳の武道家が武道と平和をこれだけ語るのにいささか驚きました。
とても映画で怒りの鉄拳振るっている姿が想像できない温和なブルース・リーを垣間見ることができます。
数少ない現代の武道哲学書かもしれません。

私は本書を読むまでブルース・リーはひとりの格闘家、カンフー俳優としての男としての評価しか知らなかった。

ところが、彼は学生時代に古今東西の哲学書を読み漁り、アメリカにおいて人種差別と闘い、自力で独自の哲学を作り出し、ジークンドーというまったく新しい精神と肉体のバランスを保つ格闘技を生み出した。

わずか３３歳で夭逝した彼のストイックな死生観、愛情、人生観、仕事観は、時代を超えて永遠に行き続け、人々に活かされることだろう。

彼曰く、「喜びと悲しみは、ふたつに分けることのできないひとつの存在の半分づつだ」つまり、この世のすべての相反する事象は互いに補完しあって存在するということだ。

私が人生に起こるあらゆる困難にぶつかったとき、本書が人生の指南書になったことは間違いない。格闘技ファンでなくともぜひ一度は読んでみる価値のある本だ。
