待ち望まれていたﾋﾞﾙ･ｴｳﾞｧﾝｽの伝記がとうとう出た｡朝日新聞の書評は､筆者が一度もｴｳﾞｧﾝｽに会ったことがないという記述に早とちりしたのか､実人生に深入りしない態度が潔い､などと､とんちんかんなものだった｡

ｴｳﾞｧﾝｽとﾄﾞﾗｯｸﾞの関係など､新知見は多い｡初めて来日したとき同伴した新妻との関係など､驚いたというかなかば呆然としてしまった｡ 翻訳はとても読みやすい｡第1刷にあった固有名詞の誤訳(例えば作曲家のﾐﾖｰがﾐﾙﾎｰﾄﾞなど)が第2刷りでかなり訂正されている｡監訳者の名前が挙がっているが､どうやらｸﾗｼｯｸには疎いらしい｡

とにかくビル･ｴｳﾞｧﾝｽのﾌｧﾝにとって必読書と思う｡今年2月のJazz Journal Internationalでも某評論家が､この1年の最高の収穫､と書いている｡お薦めします｡

当たり前のことではあるが、どれだけ彼の人生や彼の実生活を克明に記録したとしても、彼の奏でる音がなぜあれほど美しいのか、という説明にはならないし、簡単に因果関係を作ってもいけない。
ただ、読者（同時に彼のピアノの聴き手）が読むのは、彼のボロボロの人生と、本当の音を求め続ける悲しいまでの彼の欠乏感である。

そこにどのような因果があるかはわからないが、その対比は我々の胸を打つ。
もちろん、彼のピアノを聴きながら、読むべきでしょう。

ビルエバンスの歴史をひもとくにも、一番、頼りになる本だ。また、翻訳が出版されたことは何よりうれしい。関係者の苦労はいかばかりかと思う。
mixiサイトで、問い合わせがあったとき、すぐにこれをひいて見る。
CDのライナーノーツには描かれていなかった新発見に満ち満ちていえる。
