表紙には、猫が元気に塀をジャンプする写真があった。小さいからだの宙に浮いている様があまりにかっこよく、その先に何をみているのかと想像が膨らんだ。著者（動物写真家）の岩合氏は表題の「金星」は相撲になぞらえてヤラレタという意味をこめたらしい。つまり、愛くるしい猫たちにいつもやられっぱなしなのだ。

雪の季節の白川、東京の下町、烏賊がつるされた海岸・・・日本のとある風景に猫がよく馴染む。

マンションの一室で飼われた猫は、人間によって手入をされていているからモデルのようにかわいくて当たり前なのだ。飼われた猫は反抗したりせず環境にあっさり順応してくれる。飼い主の思うままに着飾ってくれ、よく似合う。それも猫の良さだろう。

本書に登場している猫たちは、どこから来たのかもわからない、路上で生活しているのだろうが、小綺麗で猫なりのプライドを感じさせられる。後ろ姿は惻隠の情？!すら感じられるものもある。人間の思うままになるもんか・・・猫らしく生きるのだと、小さいからだで表現している。それに飼われているという言葉はあまりに陳腐かもしれない。

人間とともに「暮らしている」猫たちだ。

そんな素っぴんの猫達がたまらなくかわいい！！写真を眺めては心が弾み、解説を読んでさらに楽しい・・・時を忘れてかかわっていたい写真集だ。

実は猫が好きではない私が楽しめたのだから、生粋の猫好きには涙ものの、タマラナサ！かもしれない。

道を歩いていると、たまに出会う猫に少し注目してみたいと思った。

他の猫の写真集と違い、この写真集は見飽きません。
おそらくただ猫を撮っているだけでなく、瓦屋根や裏路地、寺社、紅葉や花など季節おりおりの「日本の風景」を背景として撮っているからでしょう。背景と猫と、その両方の生かし方が絶妙で、さすがと言わざるを得ません。
都会であれ田舎であれ、日本の風景の中に生きている日本の猫を、ありのまま美しくとらえた写真集です。
朝日新書『ネコを撮る』に掲載のものと同じ写真が一部使われています。撮影裏話といった体裁の本ですが、こちらもお勧めです。

大型本ならではの迫力と、やっぱりかわいいネコたちの様子を満喫できる１冊です。

しかし、岩合さんファンとしては他の岩合さんの本で見た写真とか文章も少しまじっているところが残念、ということで星４つです。　でも本当に楽しい、ページをめくるたびに微笑んでしまう写真集です。
