本書は手に取った時に分量が薄かったため中身はどうかと思ったら結構参考になった。
著者は独学を薦めておりその心構えを中心に話が展開される。この点では渡部昇一氏の「知的生活の方法」などとは異なり具体的な方法論は殆ど書かれていない。ただ、独学には「不断の努力」が必要ということは強く印象に残った。
特に気に入った（同感であった点）のは次の2点。
1.語学習得に関する章。「語学は簡単に習得できない」ということ。昨今書店等で多くみられる「習得法」を批判（ここでは語学習得に必要な方法が多少含まれていた）。
2.自分にとって未知の分野を独学する時はいきなり本物から読めということ。聖書や外国文学作品を例にすると、いきなりそれらを手にするには難解なイメージがあるため、実際の作品よりも難解な解説書から読み始めるケースが多いと指摘。
その他にも、難解な本を読む前の心構えや対処法（とてもユニークな方法であった）も書いてあって読んで損した感じはしなかった（1時間ぐらいで完読）。

本書の手柄は学問や知識を手段とする卑しき精神を弾劾したことにある。
この手の自己啓発書では稀なことである。あんちょこ本でわかったつもりなって、「使える」本といって評価する読者、それをいかにムーブメントにできるかだけを考えているマーケティング屋に堕した編集者。己をいかに売り出すかしか考えない執筆者。
出版不況はこうした風潮の故である。
個々の議論には色々と違和感もあるが、この反時代的な『勉学術』に支持が集まるようなら、まだ日本の出版業界にもほのかな希望がある（かもしれない）。

結局のところ精神論ぽい話であるがそれそはまあそれでいいかと思いました。
昨今の勉強テクニック本が蔓延するなかで、基本の心構えに戻るのにはよかったです。しかし「本を読まない、読むことができないために感情の抑制ができずに問題わ起こしている」というのはいささか疑問。それを唯一無二の真実のような記述はどうかと思いました。
