いわずもがな、現代のルネサンス的知性のイコンとも言えるウンベルト・エーコによる美術書。
ずっしりと重みのある書で、装丁、紙質、デザインも素晴らしく、エーコー好きの僕は人に勧められて、直ちに購入した。
パラパラとメージをめくりながら、期待に胸を膨らませて読み始めた。
だんだんと、微妙な感情状態に陥ってくる・・・。はたして、この訳語はいったい何だろうか？

ほとんど直訳としかとれない稚拙な訳文で、冒頭から意味不明な表現が頻出する。
「完全言語」を書いたエーコーも呆けてこんなつじつまの合わないこと言うようになってしまったのか？
いや、おそらく、訳者自身の経験と技量の無さ、あるいは本書のコンセプトへの無理解からだろうか？
本当にひどい訳文である。
それでも、本書自体の存在価値は大いにあるので、今後版を重ねて訳の修正が入ることを期待して、星3つ。
イタリア語が出来る方は当然原著を、英語を読める方は英語版を買ったよいかもしれません。

文学でもなく研究書でもない、Ｕ.エーコ編著のこの本は
博物学的テイストの入った西洋の”美”と美にまつわる
観念の変遷をたどった、ビジュアルでは美術から
文献については哲学・文学からの視点を
紹介した、ガイドのような本です。

個々に付いて深く掘り下げているわけではありませんが
普通専門的な本などでは繋げて書かれない物が
エーコさんの脳内では関連付けがされているので
芸術・文学・哲学等（時には数学・天文・音楽も）
が同じ物に到達すべく違う切り口から
試みてきたことの移り変わりは解りやすい。

４００ページ以上で2/3はカラー図版！
文学・詩・哲学・美学等からの引用も多く
また芋蔓式にどんどん本が読みたくなってしまう所が
私としては久々に大ヒットでした。。。

やはり現代に近づくにつれ　ちょっと焦点が、多分気持ちも。。。
もともと趣味的なチョイスであったのだから
無理に現在まで追わなくても良かったんじゃないか
とは思いましたが、その散逸してしまってる感じは
ある意味、現在の美を追求するなんていうときに重なります。

そうでなかった時代がある意味うらやましい。
科学とか技術とか解明されて来たことで得た物は勿論大きい
過去においてそれを目指してきたんだ。。。
半面失ったものもあるのだなあと。
いや、やはり、正解が無く、テーマとして残される物は”美”
なのかなと。

序文には、「本書が扱うのは、美の歴史であって、美術史ではない」と書かれてはいますが、内容は、結局は西洋絵画史に近いものとなっている。絵画史の本として読むと、内容は通説そのものばかりで、特に目新しい説は述べられていない。特に現代美術の章に関しては、ほとんど陳腐とさえ言える解説が言葉少なげに展開されているにすぎず、拍子抜けした。
また、絵画史の本としては、圧倒的に情報量が少ないので、絵画史を知らない人が読むとわけがわからないんじゃないかと思う。章立ては、時代順ではなく、テーマ順に並んでいるので、歴史の流れが読み取れない。
図版が数多く収録されているが、文章に出てくる図版が掲載されていない箇所が多数あり、肝心の絵がみれないというもどかしさを何度も味わった。
また、訳文の日本語の意味がわからない場所が散見される。
高い本だし、装幀も立派で、なにより「エーコ編著」であるので、期待して読み始めたのだが、物足りなさが残った。
でも逆に言えば、ぱらぱらっとページをめくっていろんなトピックについて軽い気持ちで読んでみるという分にはいい本といえるのではないかと思います。解説はクリアカットでわかりやすいし（展覧会の音声ガイドを文章におこしたような感じです）。
エーコが書いているのは本書全体のうちの約半分。エーコ編集のアンソロジー本くらいに考えておいたほうがいいと思います。
本棚の飾りとしては、一級品の美しさ。
