著者は、造園家として、集合住宅やリゾート施設等のランドスケープデザインを行い、自らも八ヶ岳山麓に住宅小屋を設け、庭のある生活を行っています。そんな著者が「新建築住宅特集」に連載したエッセイをまとめた本ですが、内容は、「森の生活」「風景としての庭」「水の庭」「樹について」等、著者の住宅小屋での生活を始め、庭にまつわる様々なことを２２章に渡って、文章と著者自身による写真で紹介しています。文章と写真のページが交互に出てくる構成、著者の人柄がしのばれる優しい文章、発色の良い写真等、中村好文さんの「住宅読本」に対し、「庭読本」とでも呼べる本になっています、中村好文さん、吉村順三さんらの一連の著作が好きな方にお奨めの本です。
