私は現在DVD関連の仕事をしていますが、CD関連の書籍では『図解 コンパクトディスク読本』が大変参考になりました。
DVDでそれに相当する書籍がこれまで見あたりませんでしたが、やっと登場してくれた感があります。（著者・出版社に感謝です）

『体系的に学び直す―DVDのしくみ』と同時に購入しました。
『体系的に...』はドライブ開発者(またはそれに近い人)向けで、この本はDVD初心者からPC用アプリケーション使用者向けという印象があります。

本書はDVDワールドへの通行手形としてお勧めします。

日経BPソフトプレスの「体系的に学び直すDVDのしくみ」と一緒に購入した。そちらがある程度技術的背景についても正確を期している印象に比べ、本書は、技術的背景（理由）よりも、著者の今までの経験を自らの理論で「かき集めた」印象の本である。

とにかく本書はいろんなことが書いているが、一を聞いて十を知るというよりも、雑然とした経験談を見聞きするといった雰囲気だろう。どうしても、読んでいて技術的な考証に若干不安が残る文体である。（もし、内容が正確なのであれば、文体自信が惜しい感じだ!）

個人的には、こういった冗長な内容よりも、技術的なキーを明確に列挙したような本を望んでいたので、少々残念なところだ。DVD-RW と DVD+RW は実際に何が違うのか? セッションクローズとは何か? リードインにはどのような情報が書かれていて、書かれていないと何が問題なのか? 歯切れの良い説明が欲しいところである。
