私はアメリカの大学で、ビジネス専攻の学生です。統計学は必須科目で、統計学を日本でも習ったことがなかったので、まずは入門書で予備知識を・・ということで、この本を手に入れました。統計学は、最初は慣れるまで少し難しく感じがちですが、この本を予め読むことで、授業も難なく参加できました。この本は、実際授業で学ぶ基礎範囲は一通り網羅できてるし、なんといっても説明が、親切すぎるくらい、わかりやすい。筆者の出す例題も至ってシンプル、読者もそれに一緒に考えながら進むインタラクティブ形式なので、退屈にもなりません。これから統計学を学ぶという人にとっての、基礎予備知識、入門書としては、最適な本です。

統計の知識がほとんど無い状態から読み始めて分かる初歩の統計学の本を色々探しましたが、分かりやすさと適度なレベルまでの知識を与えてくれるという意味で一番満足のいく本でした。用語の使われ方が他の本と一致しないところもあったので少し？？という部分はありましたが、手始めの統計の本としては最適だと思います。本当に「涙なし」に読めます！

高校や大学の教科書ではいきなり数学記号の読み方や「標本」，「母集団」等の統計用語の説明から始まることが多々ありますが，本書では「統計学とは何か？」，「統計学は何の為の学問か？」から始まります．著者は統計学の目的を，

(1)われわれの経験を要約し，それによって人々がその本質を理解することが出来るようにする。
(2)そこで要約された事実に基づき，その他の（おそらく将来の）状況においてどのような結果が得られるかを推定，あるいは予測する。

の二点と定義します．高校や大学の教科書では「目的地がわらかぬまま長時間歩かされるような不快感」がありますが，本書では「1章 統計的調査」で統計学の目的とその全体像（「統計学の地図」と言ってもいいかもしれません）を示してくれるため，不快を感じることなく最初から最後まで「涙なし」で読み進むことができます．説明はクドイくらい丁寧で，章末の問題も理解を深めてくれるものばかりです．これから統計学を学び始める方にとって最初の一冊としてオススメです．
