著者について

1952年、岡山県西大寺に生まれる。68年、高校中退後上京。マンガ家を目指すがなかなか芽が出ず、デビューまでには10年かかった。79年、それまでの貧乏生活をコミカルに脚色した作品が「週刊漫画TIMES」に採用され、「独身アパートどくだみ荘」として連載化。すぐに人気となり、一躍「週漫」の看板作家となる。以来、「どくだみ荘」は94年まで長期連載され、単行本は42巻(続編「新・どくだみ荘」含む)を数えた。しかしその後体調を崩し、2000年9月9日、48歳の若さで永眠。

どくだみ荘…まさに男の青春ですね!作者、福谷たかしさんは、この作品を通して社会に対して様々な疑問や矛盾をえぐり出します、時に人間の弱さ、その弱い人間が、その弱さを背負って必死に生きようとする姿…、喘ぎ、また時には「弱い人間には逃げる事も必要」と教えてくれた。まさにこの作品は、兄貴であり人生の先生、福谷氏の苦悩とその類いまれな感性を感じることが出来ます。心の底で誰かに愛されたい、誰かに必要とされたい。そんな心を再認識させてくれる一冊です。ぜひ、是非!手に取ってみてください。

主人公は金もなく助平でセコイ男である。だからこそ、なのかも知れないけれど、時々にじむような侠気をみせる、それにジンワリきてしまった。
すばらしいブルースを聴いたあとのような読後感。

収録されている「どくだみ荘」自体は、バロックな過剰さもなく、「安心できる大衆娯楽作品」で、正直つまらなかった。
それよりも、巻末の「福谷たかし年譜」が読みごたえがあった。それは、本来「ガロ系」の暗い作品への志向があった作家が、タマタマ開き直って書いた「娯楽作品」が、大化けして読者の共感を得てしまい、その作品に憑依されてしまった人生だ。
シャーロック・ホームズを嫌っていて、「自分は歴史小説家だ」と自認していたコナン・ドイルのように・・。この本には、投書欄への読者の投書が収録されているが、ほとんどが主人公・堀ヨシオへの呼びかけ文となっている。まるで、堀ヨシオが実在の人物であるように。
晩年は、作品のマンネリ化と読者の過剰人気とのギャップに悩み、酒びたりの日々だったという。そうして、作品を「落とす」こともシバシバだったワケだが、「人気ナンバー１作品」を落としたくない編集部は何と、「過去の作品の絵」を元に、新たにネームを貼り付けるなどして、話を再構成して掲載したという・・。うーむ、すごい。
そして、福谷は酒の影響での病気が重なり、４８歳の若さで亡くなっている。
松田優作と交友関係があった、というのも、意外。しかも初対面での優作の言動に腹を立てた福谷が殴りかかり、その後、親友になったというのだから、いかにも優作的な交友。
