日本のサッカージャーナリズムのレベルは低い。もしFIFAランキングが存在するとしたら、そのランキングを想像することに恐怖を覚えるくらいだ。サッカー評論家も質が低すぎる。常軌を逸した結果論、はずれまくる予測､理論負荷性が強すぎて自分の脳内の理想的なサッカー（誰も見たことがない）に固執し､それ以外のサッカーを批判しまくるオピニオンリーダーぶったモダンサッカーの安手の並行輸入業者。こうした現在のサッカージャーナリズムのカオスの中から読むに値する批評家を探し出すのは至難の業だ。その中で私が常に安心してその文章に接することができる数少ない批評家の一人が西部氏である。彼の党派性から限りなく自由で､過度に理論負荷的なバイアスのかからない批評は､現実にピッチの上で起きているサッカーの「リアル」に常に真摯に向き合おうとする姿勢からもたらされている。彼は常に自分の心に感じた何かを、可能な限り正しく言葉に変換しようと心を砕いている。そうした言葉は私の心に気持ちのいいスルーパスのように届くのだ。
本書は西部氏が監督をテーマに書き下ろした小品である。
フランクな語り口で､サッカーに不案内な読者にも十二分に配慮された読みやすい構成になっている。クラブ監督と代表監督の違い､チーム作りから戦術の確立まで監督の個性がいかなる形で反映していくかなど具体的な例をあげながら的確な解説がなされている。監督論が戦術論と不可分な形で取りざたされるようになった現在､この本は監督という存在をもう一度再考するための大きな助けとなってくれることだろう。

表題の監督他の経歴をこと細かく記述している部分が多く核心部分が
何であるか解かり辛い。
著者の主観が多く事実に基づいた検証が浅くサッカーを熟知している人には、
目新しい理論がなくまるで素人相手に著者の見識を延々と語っているだけで
期待外れであった。
