アウシュビッツでコルベ神父はなぜ見知らぬ人の身代わりとなって餓死の刑を引き受けたのか。神父は何も無いところから「無原罪聖母の騎士会p.65」を設立し(1917年)、会の発行する雑誌の発行部数が百万部に達する(1939年)p.168ほどの事業家であった。収容所に入れられたのはその行動力によって「ポーランドのリーダー格の人物であったp.251」からである。殉教も、事業の成功も、学びの機会を与えられ神父となったことも、一連の聖母による召命であり、神父はそれに身をゆだねたのだと著者は説く。プロテスタントの私にとっては、「無原罪聖母」という概念が解らないが、「聖母」を「イエス・キリスト」と置き換えてみれば神父の行動は理解できる。カトリック特有の言語と思考体系で書かれた本だが、クリスチャンが読む意義はおおいにある。(著者が何者なのか全く情報が無いのが残念な本）
