昨秋、スペイン北西部のガリシア地方の県都、Santiago de Compostelaを訪れた。飛行機でMadridから飛んだのだが、Leo'nを超えたあたりから、窓から見える風景が一気に緑が濃くなり、到着した途端、それまでの乾いた空気から、しっとりと馴染む湿気に取り巻かれた。それにしても、あまりに小さな空港に、東洋人一人で、ジロジロ見られるのが、面白い。

空港バスで市内に入ったが、片言でもわかっていたスペイン語が、何だかほんにゃかして、ポルトガル語めいている上、書かれている単語にわからないものが多い。更に、何だかもっと色白で赤毛の人も増えているし・・・と思って、宿から大聖堂に歩いて行ったら、スペインには無い、哀愁を帯びたメロディーが響いてきた。Gaita、小さなバグパイプの音色。それにしても、食事は安くて美味しくて・・・量が多すぎていろいろ食べられ!なかったので、次回のスペインはゆっくりとガリシア地方に行ってこようと考えている。

武部氏の著書を読んで、自分が短い滞在で感じた、耳と目と舌の記憶がどっと戻って来ました。次にガリシアに関して書かれる予定があれば、食紀行で宜しくお願いします。

　ガリシア地方へは，紀元前6世紀頃にケルト人が定着。長らくローマの支配を逃れていたが，紀元前19年，皇帝アウグストゥスの治世に征服される。二千年も前にローマの影響下に入ったうえ，イベリア人との混血が進んだのだから，ケルトの名残など消え失せていると思っていた。そんな認識を改めさせてくれたのが本書。
　著者は〈ケルト文化圏〉をテーマに著述活動を展開するエッセイスト。曰く，ガリシアは「ラテンの鎧を着たケルト」なのだと言う。ローマに征服されなかったアイルランドと異なり，ガリシアはすっかりローマ化（ラテン化）してしまった。それでも，著者はガリシアに残る〈ケルト〉を次々と探し出していく。オウレンセ（Orense）のバグパイブ楽団，セブレイロ村（Cebreiro）にある石の家パリョーサ（palloza），丘陵に設けられた集落ヴィラドンガ遺跡，「ティル・ナ・ノーグ」を望む最果ての地にあるバローニャ遺跡，それにサンタ・テクラ遺跡。
　スペインの側から観察したのでは目にとまらないであろう〈ケルト〉を浮かび上がらせてくれる興味深い本。意気込みが強すぎる余り，ちょっとしたことに対しても「これもケルト！ あれもケルト!!」という論調になっているのはご愛敬だろう。
