フラメンコの歴史、文化誌、いやタイトル通りフラメンコの精髄をたっぷりと綴った労作。

でも、タイトルで損をしていますね。
このタイトルからは、もっと軽い読みものを想像してしまう。
ところが、ひらいてみればどのページからも鬼気せまるような迫力と意気込みが伝わってくる。決して「フラメンコ愛好家によるフラメンコ愛好家向けのエッセイ」といった類のものではない。

なにしろ本書は、小学４年生のときに「哲学者になろう」と夢みたという著者が博士号を取得した論文「フラメンコ芸術の精髄」がもとになっているのだ（著者は東大文学部哲学科卒）。

反対に、フラメンコに関してある程度学術的な書物を欲している人は、このタイトルでは手にとらないだろう。2004年にでた本をぼくが今ごろ手にしたのも、そのせいだ。

あるいは、手にしたとしても、古今東西のありとあらゆるジンャルの書物を駆使してフラメンコを語る文章を「悪のり」と感じ、辟易する方も少なくないかもしれない。

しかし、この本が持つ説得力は誰もが認めるに違いない。
知的好奇心を満たすばかりでなく、フラメンコならではの躍動感も味わわせてくれる。著者が「フラメンコを生きている」あかしが、この本にこめられていると言っていい。

わたしの知る限り、日本でもスペインですらフラメンコに関するこのような本はない。
その多くは身近なスケッチか博物館的知識の羅列に留まっている。ひとりの実践者が身をもってこれほどまでにひとつの芸術に切り込み、その豊富な知性で様々な視座からその根拠を呈示しつつ、検証から確信に至る経緯については驚きを禁じえない。おそらく、この著者の中途半端ではない知性は今後も実践者としての著者を硬化させることはないだろう。ひとりの人間の生き方そのものも浮かび上がってくる味わい深い一冊である。
