上野 千鶴子
1948年富山県生まれ。京都大学大学院社会学博士課程修了、平安女学院短期大学助教授、シカゴ大学人類学部客員研究員、京都精華大学助教授、国際日本文化研究センター客員助教授、ボン大学客員教授、コロンビア大学客員教授、メキシコ大学大学院客員教授等を経る。1993年東京大学文学部助教授(社会学)、1995年東京大学大学院人文社会系研究科教授。専門は女性学、ジェンダー研究。この分野のパイオニアであり、指導的な理論家のひとり。1994年『近代家族の成立と終焉』(岩波書店)でサントリー学芸賞を受賞。近年は高齢者の介護問題に関わっている(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　著者の作品を読んだのは初めてだったが、例えて言うと「キャリア」という科目では高得点を修めたが、「家庭」という科目では赤点だった学生の負け惜しみ話として読めないことはないかも。年を重ねるにしたがって、（介護保険が導入されたにしろ）主に家族が老後のセキュリティである「介護」を担っていることが分かってきて焦っているようだ。家族で雑魚寝することをゴキブリみたいと言ったり、子供のハンバーグは味付けが甘ったるいと言ってみたり、もともと家族でいることがなじまない性分なので、結局おひとりさまになるべくしてなったのだろう。年を重ねてさすがにさびしくなったみたいだけど、この人に友人として、「調達」され「メンテナンス」されたいですか？他の人も書いているけど、この本は東京で４ＬＤＫの自宅といくばくかの金融資産を有する著者のような富裕層のおひとりさま向けのエッセイです。介護の情報なら新聞やテレビやネットでも手に入るけどね。

　「ひとりでおさみしいでしょう」という「常識」を押し付けられてプッツン切れている様は、優等生である自分が結局「模範的、標準的な老後」を送れそうにないことを認められず逆切れしていて醜い。東大大学院教授なんてこんなもの？

シングルの老後についてのノウハウ本。といっても、「カネがそこそこあって、かつ友達がたくさんいる人」の話しか出てきません。きっと著者は、カネがなかったり友達がいない人は自己責任なので淋しく死になさい、という考えなのでしょう。

「自分の力で何かを切り開いてきた」という自負心の強い人って、「敗者」に冷たいよなあ。

他の方も書いておられますが、やはり一部の成功した人、恵まれている人の立場で書かれたものだと思います。
上野先生には期待して読ませていただいたのですが、もっと庶民の目線で書いていただきたかった。
読んでいて無神経さが目に付き、とても疲れてしまいました。
人間はそんなに強くない。順調な時ばかりではない。
今、心身ともに元気な人には参考になると思います。
