この本には、多くの臨床経験を有する著者が、選んだ典型的なひきこもりの症例があげられている。あきらかに病的なものもあれば、そうでないものもある。読者もどれかの症例にはなんらかの親近感をおぼえることであろう。総合病院の精神科医長の経験もある著者は、患者を治すという視点から、暖かくかつ冷静に患者を診ている。したがって、本書には薬の有効性についてもきちんと書かれていて、例えばパニック症候群のほとんどは、ただしい治療をうければ、完治することが示されている。しかし、本書では、生物学的な側面のことよりも、むしろひきこもりのおこる日本の文化の分析に重点をおいている。著者のアメリカやスイスでの豊富な生活体験から日本文化について考察した書き出しの部分は鋭い日本文化論になっている。また、社会の基本が家族であり個人であること、その幸せなくして社会の発展も日本の将来もないことを考えさせる。著者は、精神科医として、患者に、「常に自分を大切にしましょう。言うべきことはきちんと言えるようになりましょう。」と、その家族や職場の人には、「家族も社会ももっとお互いを助け合いましょう。」と、そして、教育者としては、「そのようなことができる人間になるように子供を育てていきましょう。」と言っている。しかし、著者には押し付けがましいところはなく、爽やかである。症例を示すことで、読者に自分の頭で考えるヒントを与えている。まさに精神科医としての面目躍如である。すべての日本人に一読を勧める。目からウロコが落ちること請け合いです。
