　世界的に有名な宗教学者のエリアーデは、母国語のルーマニア語で小説を書く小説家でもあった。自伝的な恋愛小説の「マイトレイ」や「妖精たちの夜」は、いわゆるリアリズム作品であるが、エリアーデはその他に幻想小説の名品を数々残している。

　この第１巻では、すでに邦訳が出版されている「令嬢クリスティナ」や、「ホーニヒベルガー博士」「セランポーレの夜」のほかに、未訳であった「大物」や「大尉の娘」といった短編小説が収められている。

　少々値段ははるが、単行本２冊プラス短編集を買ったと思えば、納得できなくもない。何といったって、ひと筋縄ではいかないエリアーデの未訳出小説が読めるのはここだけである。沼野充義の解説も詳しくていい。次に発売予定の第２巻も楽しみだ。
