草間は女学生のころから、「物体の周りにオーラが見えたり、植物や動物の放す言葉が聞こえたり」、といった幻覚や幻聴をしばしば経験したという。そうした幻覚を形にするためにスケッチを始め、やがて絵ばかり描くようになったそうだ。やがて、自然界や宇宙、人間や植物、怖れや神秘的な出来事が彼女を追い掛け回し、半狂乱の境地に送ることになる（後に強迫神経症と病名がつく）。それらを描きとめることが「唯一の逃れる方法」であったと彼女は言う。
その後、彼女は２８歳でニューヨークに渡り、６０年代には画家から前衛芸術家へと変貌を遂げ、パフォーマンスの形態をとった「クサマ・ハプニング」などで評判をとっていく。その間、裸の男女を使った「ボディペインティング」などでも、トレードマークの網目や水玉模様を一貫して描いて行く。保守的な日本から開放され、当時の世相や社会体制に訴えるパフォーマンスを熱に浮かされたようにアメリカで展開していく過程が、生き生きとして興味深い。７０歳を過ぎた今もエネルギーのつきない彼女は、芸術家という名にふさわしい生き方をしてきた数少ない人だと思う。

正直に言うと、私には芸術の事はよく分かりません。
草間氏の作品もまのあたりに見た事はないのですが、そんな私でもこの本はお勧めです。

とにかく驚くのが、草間氏の芸術へのエネルギー。絵を母親に反対されても、食うに困っても、警察沙汰になってもたじろがず、己の道を突き進む勇気。
彼女の生き方は一見ムチャクチャではありますが、今や世界から認められる芸術家となった事実が、彼女の確信は間違っていなかった証明になるのではないでしょうか。
私には彼女の思想は分かりません。が、思想だの道徳だのといった器の小さい事を蹴り飛ばしてしまうようなエネルギーが、彼女の生き様にはあふれています。
普段美術や芸術に興味の無い人にも「一時代を築いた女性の物語」として読んでもらいたいです。

以前から草間弥生に興味があり色々な作品を見てきて
どんな人なのかを想像していたが、この本を読むと想像以上にすさまじい
人生を送っていることがわかり感動する。
とにかくお勧めです。７０代というから驚き。
