村上龍が本書を執筆しているときに、神戸で少年A事件が起き、
隆が長い作家生活で、初めて現実と自分が書いている小説との区別がつかなくなったという曰く付きの小説。

東京にやってくる外国人に夜の歓楽街の案内を生業とするケンジのところに、ある日、米国人がやってくる。
人間が乳児の時期でも狂ってしまうことを知っている龍は、この米国人に、
新宿を舞台にして、神戸の少年Aが成人したらかくやという狂気を漲らせ、破壊的行動を取らせる。
そのシーンの凄絶さは、へたな映画や犯罪者の本を読むより、はるかに怖く、狂気に満ちあふれている。
実際に読んでいて吐きそうになる。

ケンジは彼に「瞋りとか欲望、そういったものを日本では煩悩というんだ」と語る。彼は、「ボンノウ、か。美しい言葉だ。そうだろうな」と静かに応じる場面がある。

現代人は皆、煩悩をコントロールすることがますます難しくなって来ている。
その現代人すべての狂気を、一米国人という形で肉体化させた龍は、
このとき人間の怒りや悲しみ、絶望、欲求不満という言葉ではなく、Bon-nouと表現し、また
小説のタイトルを「みそ汁のなかで」とすることで、西欧思想以外での人間の狂気と煩悩の制御を期待してみせたのだろうか。

読み終えた後、頭と体が痺れたようになり、小一時間動けなかったなどという体験を初めてした。

才能あふれる村上龍でなければ、書ききれなかった世界ではないかと、素直に思う。

　日本は世界でもっとも早く民主主義社会の限界に行きずまったのかもしれない。それを象徴する様な「日本的共同体」。
主人公ケンジはそのただなか、新宿歌舞伎町の夜の街を「異様な皮膚を持つ男」フランクと歩く。フランクが起こす数々の惨劇をまのあたりにしながら、ケンジは自覚する。「意思」を発さなければ殺される。

　作者は日本的共同体の「危機感の無さ」「相互依存」「閉塞性」
を攻撃しながらも、そこに存在する形容しがたい癒しの感覚をミソスープと表現する。
　フランクは予言する。
「これから、僕の様な人間が世界の主流になって行くと思う。」
はたして、日本の”ミソスープ”は外からの殺りく者であるフランクを癒したのだろうか？

私はこの本の帯に引かれて買いました。青年犯罪が絶えない世の中
だったので「子供の殺人に原因はないよ、幼児が迷子になるのに
原因がないのと同じだ、親が目を離したから？それは原因じゃなくて
子供が迷子になる過程の一つにすぎない。」私には意味を考えれば
考えるほどわからなくなっていく文だったけどどこか納得できる。

人の怪しさ、世の怪しさがよく表現されていて面白い作品だと思います。
