　２６歳の衛藤はるはスポーツジムのインストラクターで、３４歳の早勢理一郎は書店の店長。この２人は２年前に１年ちょっとの結婚生活を終えるが、今も付き合いを続けている。この主人公でもある２人がひょんなことから互いの結婚相手を探すこととなるのだが、互いに相手に対して未練を持ちつづけ、今まで以上に相手のことを考えていくのだが、理一郎が初恋の相手と同窓会で会うこととなり、２人は結婚することに。その神父役としてはるが務めることとなるのだが、はるはこの結婚式当日に理一郎と離婚の原因にもなったことの隠された秘密を知ることに……。

　野沢尚としては異色作といえる恋愛小説ですが、上下巻を感じさせない程一気に読まされた作品です。上巻では主人公の２人の態度に読んでいて互いの煮え切らない態度にイライラもしましたが、下巻では感動の秘密が隠されており、物語としても登場人物それぞれの個性を明確にして、特にラストは実にハラハラさせてくれます。その登場人物も実にいい人達ばかりで、それが物語の魅力にも繋がっています。

野沢氏の作品は、冒頭からドラマチックな展開で引き込まれるという特徴があるが、本作は違う。女性と男性が交互に語る形で物語が進むが、特に前半の女性の口調には違和感を感じる。しかし、100ページを過ぎた頃からいろいろな秘密が暴露され前半の凡庸さが意味を持ち始める。そして、後半にはすっかりいつもの野沢ワールドに引き込まれている。そのへんのダイナミズムもすべて計算されたものかもしれない。よくできた映画のように無駄がなく、断片が徐々に塊をなしていくようだ。
