とにかく圧倒された。
まわりの景色がわからなくなり、時間と場所の感覚が無くなっている、そんな状態がおとずれる。
作品の出来や文章の質を問わずともかくインパクト、ということならダントツで１位に挙げる。
ゆえに時間のない時片手間に、というのは絶対にいけない。
「もしも○○でなかったら」「もしも○○だったら」というのはドリフは言うに及ばずこれまでも各メディアで表現されてきた題材であるのに、このインパクトというのはいったいなぜなんだろう。
思うにこの作品は、「体感」とくに「痛覚」に訴えるように書かれている。
だいたいがしょっぱなから、雨の山中をえんえん行進、ああ、しんどい。
その後も手足がちぎれとび、目には砂が入り、とにかく痛い。
ごていねいに、アメちゃんの相手をさせられる村の女の子のピアスまで引きちぎられる。ああ、痛い。
にもかかわらず、痛みを感じなくなる幻覚剤によって死ぬまで撃ち続ける兵士、なんて人をおちょくったものまで登場させて、さらに読者の「痛覚」が刺激される。
村上龍は徹底して「この痛みを感じろ」と迫る。「頑丈なやつ」村上。
キッツい作品だ。でも、体で感じた痛みは忘れない。何かをふっきりたい時には効くかもしれない。そんな痛い小説。

とにかく凄まじい暴力描写に度肝を抜かれる。
著者が現代日本に感じている嫌悪感や苛立ちが行間からいやというほど伝わってくる。

ただ村上龍の場合、彼の日本に対する思いが強すぎるために作品としての完成度をそいでしまう傾向がある。この作品もそうで、政治性や思想がダイレクトに伝わる半面それ以外の場面、例えば登場人物の会話や舞台設定についての説得力という点で急激にモチベーションが下がるのだ。

現代日本が隠蔽しているものを露にしたいという欲求は理解できるが、それをそのまま表現するのであればエッセイで十分で、何も小説というスタイルを取る必要はないはずだ。
あえて小説という表現形態を取るのであれば、著者の個人的思想だけではなく、緻密な小説世界を構築することが不可欠と思う。

「村上龍は、結局これが言いたかったんだ。」
と言っても過言ではない作品かも知れない。
彼の苛立ちの殆どの要因は、曖昧で和を重んじるだけで「結果」を最優先事項とすることが馬鹿らしいくらいタブーとされている現日本の腐りきったモチベーションに対するものでもある。
私自身働いていて思うが、「会社員」として一番大事なのは、「仕事に対する誠実さ。」ではなく、「その場を、いかに上手く誤魔化すか。」である。その陳腐な構図は、今や国家レベルで日本列島を当たり前のように腐食させている。何故ならそれをやってれば、「世界のことはわからないが、とりあえず日本国内では可愛がられる。」からだ。
私は、個人的に肌身に染みて知っているが、そんなもので絶対に「長期的利益」は上がらない。いずれ今の日本は、「危機感」と「当たり前の生活」に飢えた発展途上国に簡単に追い抜かれてしまうであろうことは、確実だと思う。「飢え」と「危機感」は、生命体が何らかの進化をとげるのに、最も有効的な分子的な触媒以上の爆発力を持っているからだ。
だから私は、この作品鑑賞して見る限り、村上龍が、安易に日本批判を趣味としているとはどうしても思えない。
批判せざるを得ない要因が、世界の目から見て、明らかに日本を題材にした場合に多すぎるのは、世界の公正な目から見て、あまりにも現日本が甘すぎるからだ。
その甘さを、この作品は完璧に払拭してくれる。むしろ世界を凌駕してくれている。
フィクションというだけで絶望的かもしれないが、そこからフィジカルでストレートなモチベーションを引きずり出してくれるのは、私にとって、この作品だけかも知れない。
