2000年にJリーグ1部に昇格した川崎フロンターレ。その昇格への厳しい道のりを描いたノンフィクションだ。私も99年のJ2を実際に見て、その熱さと厳しさを肌で感じた。躓いたチームをいかに立て直したか、その感動は2000年のJ1で発揮されるはずだった。だが、昇格の立役者は2000年の舞台に立てなかった。川崎Fは再びJ2に落ち2001年を迎えた。単に昇格を勝ち得るだけではなく、それを活かすことの難しさを、本書を読んでもう一度確認して欲しい。サッカーファンだけではなく、広く読まれて欲しい本である。

入れ替え戦というものは、なぜこんなにも緊張とそのあとに訪れる興奮を呼び起こすのか。それは、すべてを失い奈落のそこへ突き落とされるという恐怖と、より上質の名誉を求める激情がぶつかり合い爆発するからである。そう思っていた。ところが、胸を借りる側、この本で言えばフロンターレにも、ある種の恐怖は存在した。しかも、恐怖ははじめからあったわけではない… 金子達仁のノンフィクションは本当にすばらしい。まるで自分が登場人物になって、その恐慌を来たしている状況にあるような気にすらさせてくれる。そうすることでわれわれ一サッカーファンはストレスを昇華できるのだ。

…実に劇的――もしシナリオライターが書いたとしたら陳腐としか言わざるを得ない――な形で幕を閉じた’９９年の入れ替え戦（現在は行われておらず、’０３年復活予定）をぜひ１度味わっていただければと思う。

３人の共著だが、個人的には金子達仁の書いたところ意外はあまり興味を惹かれなかった。もちろん中西哲生といえば当時フロンターレの主将を務めていた男なので一見の価値はあるが。金子にとってはもうひとつの得意分野である日本サッカーの評論もある。いつもの視点とは若干違って非常に新鮮だった。こちらもすばらしい。

4.0 out of 5 stars 「勝つことに執着できる環境」とは。, 2009/6/21
98年11月19日，フロンターレにとってはアウェイの一発勝負。いわゆる「博多の森の悲劇」。後年入れ替え戦を語るときに必ず引き合いに出される，文字通り壮絶な試合でした。

97年の勝ち点1差の昇格逃し。98年のこの試合。これらを糧として99年のJ1昇格を勝ち取った流れと，バブルがはじけた当時のJリーグの状況を絡めながら「日本でも勝つことに執着できる環境と選手が現れた」と語っていた本です。

真の勝負強さは，勝てば天国・負ければ地獄という環境からつくられる。それが全てだとも思いませんが，スポーツの面白さを引き出す重要なファクターであって，それを十二分に感じさせてくれます。
