   北斗の拳マニアにおくる、ちょっと辛口の研究書。硬軟取り混ぜた切り口で、北斗の拳の本質に迫る。

   プロローグの「『北斗の拳』は、人間性ムキ出しの物語である！！」から穏やかでない。北斗の拳と戦国時代との対比から、北斗の拳のストーリーの中心ともいえる「殺人」について考察する。

   キャラクター分析や他のマンガキャラクターとの仮想対決、名言集などもあるが、この本の本質は、第1章の「北斗神拳とは何か？」と第4章の「『北斗の拳』はなぜここまで、人の心を掴むのか？」の2章に尽きる。第1章では、「ギリシャ神話や日本神話の内容は、親子ゲンカや兄弟ゲンカの話がほとんどであるように、『北斗の拳』も壮絶な兄弟ゲンカの話である」ところから「『北斗の拳』は神話である」と看破する。また、第4章では、スーパーマンなどのアメリカ型ヒーローと、仮面ライダーやウルトラマンなどの日本型ヒーローの対比や、時代劇やプロレスとの類似性を示すことによって、北斗の拳の特異性と大衆性を鋭く指摘している。

   また、第2章では、2001年9月現在コミックバンチに連載中の姉妹編、『蒼天の拳』についてまるまる1章を割いて背景を分析している。開始して1年もたたないストーリーに対して研究本が出るのは珍しいが、北斗の拳という壮大なバックヤードがあればこそだろう。主人公はケンシロウの叔父という設定だ。

   手厳しいところもあるが、北斗の拳への愛着と蒼天の拳への期待が感じられる1冊。（大脇太一）

テレビでも「北斗の拳２」は放送したが、今回は北斗の歴史をさかのぼったないようだ！
