表紙やタイトルからの印象では西洋の童話のようなお話かと思いきや、とても日本的なお話です。ばあちゃんのお世話をする孫であるコウコとそのばあちゃんがさわちゃんと呼ばれた少女のころのお話です。それぞれのお話が最初はつながっていないように見えますが、それぞれの章で1つずつ何かしらの布石をおいていきます。それがだんだんつながっていって、最後にはとっても素敵なものが完成します。時代を超えたお話の接着剤は熱帯魚であるエンゼルフィッシュ。このエンゼルフィッシュは憎たらしい存在なのに、最後にはとてもいとおしくさえ感じます。このお話全体に天使がちりばめられていて、最後まで読むとタイトルの意味がとっても深く感じられます。

最後にコウちゃんにゆるしてもらえてさわちゃんはしあわせだったんじゃないかな。

　刺々しい言葉を使うわけでもなく、特別華美な言葉を使うこともしないのに、梨木さんは、いつも人間の醜さ、美しさを鋭く描いている。悪い人間が、でてくるわけではない。普通の人間のなかにある、「悪」の部分を梨木さんは描ききる。だから、今まで誰にも見せられなかった自分の奥底の感情に引き寄せて、彼女の本を読むことができる。

現代を生きるユウコと祖母の少女の頃の話が交互に出てくる所が面白い。現在と過去との時間の紡ぎあいに、他の作家には決して織り成すことができない彼女独自の手法が使われているように思う。
古い昔話に通じるような、神秘的な部分も含んでいてそういう部分も私は、気に入っている。　

「生きることとは」と高々に叫び、読者に問うような場面はなくて、物語全体は淡々と進んでいくのだけれど、究極的には「生きる」ということを深く深く考えさせてくれる本。

少し呆けて、トイレに行くのにも人の手を煩わせるようになってしまった祖母の世話に疲れた母の代わりに、宵っぱりの娘コウコは、熱帯魚を飼う代わりにほんの少しだけ祖母の世話をすることになる。だけど、母の前ではぼうっとしているようにしか見えなかった祖母は、コウコの前ではお喋りな娘さんのようになるのだ……。

コウコの話と、祖母さわちゃんの娘時代の話が交互に重ねあわされ、こんな短い話のなかに、祖母がずっとこだわってきた出来事が織り込まれてきていて、決して複雑なことは書いてないはずなのに、なんともいえない広がりと深みを感じます。

登場人物が知ることの出来ない事実のつながりを読者だけが知っていることの疚しさを、こんなにも強く感じたのは初めてです（いつもは、逆に気持ち好く愉しいものなのに）
