　本書は、現代のマヤの人々の状況を知る上で、大変参考になる。私自身、マヤ文明に興味があり、実際にメキシコにあるティオティワカン、ウシュマル、カバー、チェチェン・イツァー、トゥルム遺跡に足を運び、実物を目にしたのであるが、その際、ティカル、キルグアといったメキシコの遺跡に劣らず、すばらしいマヤ遺跡がグアテマラに存在することを知り、グアテマラに住むマヤの人々のことを知るために本書を購入、読むことになった。本書の冒頭部はマヤの遺跡のことが書かれているが、著者がリゴベルタ・メンチュウに関する本を知り、現代のマヤの人々に興味を持つことになって、現代の彼らを取材し、その内容をこの本に記載することになる。これにより、私もはじめてグアテマラにおいて最近まで内戦が続いていたこと、その内戦によりマヤの人々が弾圧されたという事実を知った。本書の最後の方に記述されているあるマヤの人の言葉、「俺たちは何がだめなんだ？どうして日本は近代化を遂げて豊かになったんだ？」という問いかけ。起源をたどれば、マヤ人と日本人はもとは同じモンゴロイドであるだけに、この言葉は私の胸にずっしりとのしかかり、胸が痛んだ。では、実際にマヤの人々に何がしてあげられるのか、というと何もできないのであるが、現代のマヤの人々を心から応援して行きたいと思わせる一冊であった。
