ウイーンには、一度しか行ったことがありませんが、とても美しい街で感動しました。
この本にはとても分かりやすく、かつ面白くオーストリアの近年の歴史や政治状況などが書かれており、とても興味深く読ませていただきました。
表面的な、一通りの解説ではなく、きちんと取材されており、写真もたくさん入っていて、読み応えのある本でした。

やはり現地で直接、目や耳にしたことをストレートに表現されているものは、感動が伝わってきます。

また、ひとつひとつのトピックが短いのでよいです。
映画「サウンド・オブ・ミュージック」について書かれたトピックは、興味深かったです。

読後感は表題の通り、まさに「美しい都のもう一つの顔」を見事に活写した労作です。最近読んだ本の中で興味深く、かついろいろ知らなかったことを教わった本でした。

第2次世界大戦、敗戦、米軍の占領といった、暗い時代を経験した者（私）にとって、本書の前半はユダヤにまつわる逸話、ナチスの戦争犯罪、その他いろんなことを教えてくれました。知らなかったらそれで済んでしまう事ですが、あの暗い時代を生きてきた者にとって、今まで知らなかった歴史の事実を知り得たことは大きな感激です。

それに日本との比較（これは的を得たテーマです）や、第4章のオペラとカフェもいいですね。超一流の芸術を気軽に楽しめる街、カフェハウスの持つ伝統とその醸し出す雰囲気、残念ながら今の日本では味わえないのでしょうか。。

戦争と平和について、沖縄は国内で特異的な問題を抱えていることは現在でも続く事実ですが、一方でこの本を通して音楽の都ウィーン、サウンドオブミュージックというよく知られた場所、映画の中に戦争、人種差別の陰があることを知りました。これらが非常に身近なことなのだということを改めて考えることが出来てとてもよかったです。
