沖縄が好きで、沖縄の文化に興味があります。

ただ、今の沖縄は一度戦争で全てを失ってから再建されたものです。きっと戦前の沖縄にはもっともっとすばらしいものがたくさんあったのだろうと思われます。そう思った時に、沖縄を考える上で戦争は避けては通れない問題なのだと思いました。私の大好きな沖縄が、沖縄の人達が、一体どんな目にあってきたのか、それを知りたくて色々な本を探している時にこの本に出会いました。

この本には歴史や軍や政治の話など、難しい話も一部載っています。これは読み手に誤解を与えないようにと加えられているものですが、基本的には島の一人の女性が体験した、目撃した話を中心に、一般の人達の体験が書き綴られているものです。それだけに、読んでいるうちに「もしも!!これが私だったら、私の家族、友達だったら」と思い、辛い気持ちになります。

本のタイトルにあるように、集団自決の話が多く記載されています。集団自決があった事は学校の歴史の授業などで勉強して知っている人も多いと思います。しかし、その時そうしなければならなかった人達がどういう思いでいたか、最後の時にどういう会話をし、どういう行動をし、そしてどうなったか、知っている人は少ないと思います。

悲しい話で思わず目を背けたくなりますが、「昔のこと」と思わずに、多くの人にこの事実が伝わり、色々な角度から戦争について考える機会が増えれば良いと、改めて感じました。

平和で小さな島にアメリカ軍上陸。日本軍の間違った情報に翻弄され、日本軍とアメリカ軍の板挟みになりながらも、日本軍にけな気に協力する沖縄の人々。戦争が終わって６０数年経っても癒えることのない傷を正直に伝えてくださっています。是非、多くの方に読んで欲しいと思います。

座間味島、渡嘉敷島の住民集団自決に関して、大江健三郎、岩波書店が訴訟を起こされています。事実として守備隊長が住民に直接玉砕命令を出したというのは違うのかもしれません。当時の守備隊長が虚偽の報道などにより被害を被ったのであれば当然謝罪は必要でしょう。しかし住民の集団自決という問題を命令があったかなかったかという問題に矮小化するのは間違っていると思います。その背後にあるもっと大きな問題を考える必要があると思います。そのような意味で事件の直接の当事者の証言を含むこの著書は一読に値すると思います。
