本書の目的は、自家歯牙移植における創傷の治癒、適応症、術式、予後(術後経過)をわかりやすくまとめ、多くの歯科医師(とくに臨床家)が正しい知識と理解をもつための一助にすることである。創傷の治癒の章では、自家歯牙移植を理解するために必要な治癒機転をできるだけわかりやすい図を用いて解説を試みた。適応症と術式(治療の流れ)では、多くの保存的な適応症と詳しい術式をアトラス形式で見ることができるように配慮した。またさまざまな状況で移植が対応できるように、多種類の移植の流れを紹介するよう努力した。術後経過を長期間追った症例を可及的に多く提示し、統計的数値だけでなく臨床実感として移植の予後について把握できるように配慮した。また、この本の特徴は、歯根完成歯の移植を中心に考察されている点である。これにより移植の適応症が広まったと同時に正しい適応症の把握(非適応症の排除)が可能になった。
