書籍の内容はまあ悪くない。あなたが他の言語を使いこなしていて、Pythonを学びたいなら買ってみたい本の選択肢の一つになると思う。
でも、書籍とまったく同じ内容がネットで読める。日本Pythonユーザ会にそっくりそのまま翻訳がある。
それを買った後で知ってひどくガッカリした。「てにおは」や些細な単語の選択が違うだけで、無料で読める内容にお金を払ったなんて...。
翻訳者が付け加えた付録みたいなのもあるけど、「ブログにでも書けば？」と思う内容でした。

まず始めに言っておくべきことは、web上でもほぼ同じものが読めるということ(もちろん無料)。ただ、しっかり腰を据えて読むという点では、本のほうがいいのではないでしょうか。
内容的には、基本の全てをしっかり網羅しています。この一冊読んでPythonが書けるとは思えませんが、まずPythonという言語が何者かを知るにはいい本です。
また、Pythonではやはりオブジェクト指向が重要となるのですが、この本ではほとんど触れられていません。先にオブジェクト指向の勉強は必要です。関数型言語に関しても少し知識を付けておくと理解が進むはずです(Pythonが関数型言語というわけではないのですが)。

疎にして漏らさず。
安さと薄さが不安だったがいい本でした。2.5対応の本です。
Pythonを作った本人が言うことばには無駄がなくて「あ、そういうことね」ってすっと染みこむ感じがある。なにか特別に凄いことを書いているわけではないのだけれど。
たとえば関数全部の詳細な説明があるかというとありません。サクサク触りながら、こういう作りなんだよって全体像を見せてくれる本。
4章までは簡単。5章以降「概念」とかも出てくるので難しく感じる人がいるかも。4章まで学んだことでいろいろやっていると、5章以降の情報が役に立ってきます。
この本だけでPythonに飛び込むのはいささか無謀ですが、一緒に読める何か(それはPythonについてくるドキュメントでもいい)があれば、事足りちゃうかもしれません。
こう書くじゃん、するとこうなる。ね？おおなるほどなるほどね。
じゃあコレやるには…(ここでドキュメント登場)…なるほどこうか。
こういうサイクルができる人には良書。
