野心に燃えた数人の開発者が、スティーブ・ジョブスに黙って新しい操作画面の設計作業を進めたこと。彼らの努力が認められ、フロッピ・ディスクを模していた操作画面が、「デスクトップ」と呼ばれる現代的な画面に差し替わったこと。中心メンバーのビル・アトキンソンが、出勤途中の交通事故で死にかけた時でさえ、周囲にOSの描画ルーチンの話をしていたこと。

これらのエピソードを彩るのが、膨大な図版資料である。「Possible?」、「I vote yes」―。手書きのソフトウエア設計図に残る開発者同士のやりとりからは、チームの高揚した雰囲気が読み取れる。

Macintoshの歴史に関する本はいくつかありますが、これはその決定版と言える内容になっています。
スティーブ・ジョブズやビル・アトキンソンなど有名な人物についての様々なエピソード、CM「1984」に関する話、MacPaintやQuickDraw、Finderといった伝説的ソフトウェア開発の舞台裏、プロトタイプから出荷版までのGUIの変遷、コマンド記号の由来、Microsoftとの関わり...Macintoshを巡る興味深い話が詰まっています。
開発者が書いているため、技術的な話も結構あります。MacOSの内部について多少なり知識のある方なら、さらに面白く読めると思います。

スティーブ・ジョブスを中心としたMacintosh開発にまつわる栄光と挫折のエピソードは数え切れないほど溢れている。その中でも、この本はおそらく空前絶後の最高傑作だろう。日本を代表するApple][ハッカーである柴田文彦氏の訳も愛情と気合いに溢れている。

断片的な逸話のなかから、Macの開発に携わった人達の魅力的なキャラクターが、徐々に輪郭鮮明に立ち現れてくる。そしてなにより、ものをつくる集団。それも世界を変えるものをつくる集団だけが持つ熱気、幸福感といったものが読むものにもひしひしと伝わってくる。一生の間のひとときでもいい、こんな時間を持てたら、なんと幸せなことだろうかと思う。もちろん、成功したがどうかが問題なのではない。この過程の中に身を置き、体験することに価値がある。だからこそ、この本を通じて追体験することで、こんなにもワクワクするのだ。

~Macintoshのソフトウェアに深く関わったHertzfeldが著者だから、信頼できる正確さ、細かいとことや人々の関わりがよくわかる。いろいろな写真が懐かしい。私が始めて買ったパソコンはMac~~ 512kだ。当時、Macintoshを特集したBYTE誌の座談会的な解説を眺めて、こういう人たちがMacintoshを作ったのだなぁと興味を持った。もっと詳しく知りたいとずっと思っていた。本書で十分に描かれているように思う。日本語訳は、原著にない文書も加わっているのが、ありがたい。開発者にティーンエイジャーがいるのに驚く人も多いと思う。大学を中退したり、行かなかっ~~た人たちが活躍できた時代だ。高校生でも、世界を変えることができる。無理解な人に邪魔されることがあっても、自分のやりたいことをしよう。どんなことでも成功への一歩だ。~
