Macの内部にどういうメカニズムと技術が実装されているかが説明されている。GUIの下に隠れた機能を知ってパワーユーザになるための一冊目としても優れているし、WindowsやLinuxといった他のプラットフォームから乗り換えたユーザがTigerの技術的詳細を得るための本としても有益。説明はプログラミングベースではなく、ツールやコマンドの設定方法を紹介しながら進み、図表やスクリーンショットが豊富で読みやすい。

内容的には、ブートプロセス、ディレクトリ、ファイルシステムの章が特に役立った。例えば、Open Firmware（マシン比依存のBIOS）とBootX、launchdを介したブート、そしてブートプロセスでのサービスの起動設定などは分かりやすく書かれている。ディレクトリ関係では、Open Directoryが、NetInfoやLDAP、Active Directoryをどのようにサポートしていて、BSD古来のパスワード管理とどう違うか、LDAPを使ったドメイン管理の方法などを興味深く読んだ。ファイルシステムに関しては、HFS+の現状と限界、Journaling機能、plistで実装されているスマートフォルダなどが勉強になり、さらに Appleが公式には発表していない機能、例えば、Automatic file defragmentationやAdaptive hot-file clusteringなどが紹介されているのも有益。

この本を読んで、System 7からOS X Tigerへの技術的進化がよく理解できた。また、その進化にNeXTSTEPがどう寄与したのか、さらにBSDベースでありながらBSDと違う部分はどこか、といったことも分かる。
