他のレビュアーが書かれているように、「MySQLをどのように使うか」について書かれている。
特にLAMP構成で仕事をする人には、お勧め。

特に動作環境に依存するコードをあまり書きたくない場合、目的の結果を取得するには、MySQL依存のSQLを書かずに済ます方法を探す場合に重宝している。私の目的以外でも、数行に渡る SQL を一文にしたり、プログラム側で処理していた処理をMySQL依存の関数で処理させたりしたい場合にも役に立つ。

一般的なスクリプト言語だけではなく、FileMakerやMA AccessやMS Excelとの連携方法なども記述されており、小規模の開発を行う人も重宝するはず。

もっとも、MySQLをここまで詳しく解説している書籍はこれだけなので、あまり選択の余地はないかもしれないが。

Vol1の感想です。
「どう使うか」が、中心です。
そのため、
・SQLの書き方(Mysql特有のものも、そうでないものも）
・プログラミング言語からのアクセス（Java、PHP、Perl、Python）with サンプルソース
・データのインポート、エクスポート
などが中心です。
インストール、データベース管理の話題は、ほとんどないです。

「XXXXXするには」＋その回答という形式で、２００問強が掲載されてます。

MySQL初心者です。普通のSQLじゃん、という話題も多かったですが、中には、Mysql特有のものや、レコードの挿入時間、変更時間の自動設定等、個人的には「知らなかったぁ~」という話題が多かったです。また、「オブジェクト指向のPHP用Mysqlインターフェースの説明」など、参考になること多々でした。
「オライリー」の本は、ちょっと苦手なんですが、この本は、読みやすかったです。
