10年前であればコンピュータと生物学分野ような学術領域が重なりあうことは、ほとんどなく、生物学分野の研究においてコンピュータが中心的な役割を担てはいなかった。生物学は顕微鏡などで観察することが中心であったのである。しかし、現在ではヒトゲノム解析などのようにコンピュータは生物学的問題の発見や解析の過程において必要不可欠なものになり、生物学とコンピューティングの最先端の領域は互いに収束しつつある。このことは、生物学、遺伝学、新薬発見、医学といった分野に大変革をもたらしている。本年1月に発行して、反響を呼んだ『実践バイオインフォマティクス』の続編にあたる本書は、バイオインフォマティクスの分野でデータ解析の定番ツールとして、実際の研究現場で多用されている、Perl言語によるプログラミングについての手引き書である。
Perl言語の基礎をわかりやすく解説するだけでなく、実例として実際の生物学的データを活用した実践本位の内容となっている。

　大量の配列情報を解析するにはプログラミングのスキルが必須です。この本は文字列操作が得意でありかつ習得が容易なPerl言語を使った、基本的な配列解析プログラムの書き方を解説しています。Perl初心者がいきなりこの本から始めても何とかなるとは思いますが、「初めてのPerl」や「すぐわかるPerl」あたりの本を使って、ある程度Perlの基本文法を身につけてからの方が効率良く学習できると思います。
　ソースコードが多く書かれているので、Perlの基礎は大体身につけたけれど、実際にバイオインフォマティクスのプログラムを書けと言われると自信が無い人に最適な本でしょう。
　内容は、モチーフ検索の初歩やBLAST結果からの情報抽出など、基本的なものばかりです。

プログラム言語になじみがなくても、例題を丁寧に説明してあるので、
大変解りやすかったです。
Perlを詳しく知るにはこの本だけでは不十分かも知れませんが、
生物系の分野でPerlを使ってどのようなことができるかを知るには
最適な本だと思います。

Perlの言語自体それほど複雑ではないですし、バイオインフォマティクス

に興味があればPerlから初めてみるのもどうでしょうか？

　訳がこなれていない部分がある、「文字列の操作」のように他の本ではひとまとめになっている項目が各章にちらばっている、などの難点はありますが、Perlの基礎を知っていてすぐに使えるスクリプトが書きたいという人には役にたつと思います。反面、基礎から系統立てて勉強したいという人には向いていないかもしれません。
　各章の演習問題に、GC含量を求める、配列モチーフを探す、GenBankファイルから情報を抽出する、などがあり、答えがO'Reillyのウェブサイトからダウンロードできるのも、けっこう実用的です。
