この本は、Cocoaアプリケーションの作成方法を学びたい人にとって、すばらしい出発点になります。豊富なサンプルコードを実際にコンパイルしながら、CocoaAPIの基本的な使い方やオブジェクトの扱い方を学ぶことができます。
内容は、アップルから日本語訳がPDFで配付されているDiscovering OPENSTEP:A Developer TutorialをベースにMacOS X向けに大幅改訂したもののようです。

出発点から一つ一つ解説して、最終的にはマルチドキュメントアプリケーションを作成することができます。
C言語の基礎知識と、オブジェクト指向に対する下地があったうえでこの本を読破すれば、自分の作りたいと思ったアプリケーションを作ることができるようになることでしょう。

~日本語として意味のとおる文章を期待すると裏切られます。次の訳例をどう思いますか？

Therfore, most of the the time you will want to construct paths
whose points are specified in the view's coordiate~~ system.

そこでパス構成では、ほとんどすべての点の座標がビューの座標系で指定されます。

これは一例ですが、全体としてこの程度の翻訳レベルです。
英語に抵抗感のない人は原書の方がいいと思います。~

アップル社の開発者が書かれた本なので入門といえど難易度が高いのは当たり前、というのを前提で読むといいと思います。ただ、cocoaのクラスの日本語リファレンスがないので、このインスタンスメソッドが何を意味しているのか？ということを日本人である我々が調べることは、英語が達者な方以外は困難であることは間違いないと思います。そして、この本のプログラムの説明は「わからないことはリファレンスを見てください。」ぐらいの説明程度だと思います。
この本はほかの本に載ってないクラスの使い方を勉強する本ではないのでしょうか？（特にNSMutableDictionaryのソート）
せめてクラス、インスタンスメソッドのこの本で使ってある程度のリファレンス的なことは載せるべきだったと思います。
