魔法の力を必ずしも自分のために使うことができなモー。
その娘のメギーは、父親と同じ力を持つことを知らない。
なんでも思う通りになるのが魔法だということではないことを、嫌と言うほど思い知らされる。それでも、不思議な世界の中に取り込まれていってしまう。

続刊の魔法の文字まで、一気に読み進んでしまいました。

「どろぼうの神さま」「竜の騎士」についで、コルネーリア・フンケの三作目。

この物語は、「本」「文字」の力を中心に描いています。
本の修繕を業とする父親を持つ１２歳の少女メギーが主人公です。
本を朗読する事により、物語の中の登場人物を表に登場させる力を持つ父親をめぐる事件が起こります。
「文字は魔法の力を持つ」という言葉が、何度も登場しますが、「本」「文字」には、現実を変える力があるとしています。現実とは、社会であり個人でもあるのでしょう。
「物語」とは、ある意味で「夢」であり「理想」でしょう。そうした「物語」を沢山読むことによって、現実の社会や個人も「理想」のものに近づくということでしょう。

現代社会においては、インターネットや様々なメディアの発達で、必要な情報が簡単に手にはいるようになりました。でも、それだけでいいのでしょうか？昨今、家族の関係も社会の現状も、殺伐としたものになってきています。こうした現実の社会に対する救済策の一つとして、作者は、「本」「文字」を提唱しているのでしょう。それだけに、次代を担う子どもたちに、この本を読んで欲しいというのが、作者の願いでしょう。

ドイツのファンタジー作家と言えば、ミュハイル・エンデを思い出しますが、その後継者といわれるだけあって、ストーリー・テラーでありながら、その中に強い哲学性を持っています。

続編「魔法の文字」も出版されており、これからも注目の作家です。

厚さと表紙に惹かれて思わず買いました。児童文学の範疇なのでしょうが子供には少々難しいかも知れません。むしろ昔子供だった大人にお勧め。
