この本はダライ・ラマ14世の言葉集です。
チベットの美しい写真を背景に、数行の簡潔なダライ・ラマのメッセージが記さ
れています。

ダライ・ラマの言葉は、どれも”人間性”の根幹に関わる深遠なものです。
簡潔な言葉のひとつひとつに、反論の一分の隙の無い、確かな説得力がこめられている。

今まで、ダライ・ラマに関する本は何冊か読んできましたが、
このたった数分で読める薄い本が、一番、ダライ・ラマ14世の偉大さを
伝えてくれました。

仏教徒でない人、無神論者でも他宗教の信者の人でも、抵抗なく読める本です。

自身の内にある、怒りや憎しみを超えたいと思っている全ての人に、
自分に打ち克つ力をくれる本です。

巻末にはダライ・ラマ14世とチベットの歴史がまとめられています。
ダライ・ラマがいかに激動の時代を、深い悲しみと苦痛を感じながら生きてきた
のかを窺い知ることができます。
そして、そのような状況にあっても、ゆるすという選択ができることを彼は体現
しているのです。

心は、いかなる状況にあっても何物にも縛られず”自由”であることができま
す。また、その”自由”の可能性は計り知れなく、無限ですらあるのです。
だから、ダライ・ラマは「私ができることは全ての人ができることだ」と
仰るのでしょう。

人間のより洗礼され調和のとれた美しい心を求め育てる近道でもあり、絶対条件でもあるのが怒りや憎しみに囚われないことでしょう。
より深遠で鍛えられた知性を得ることで、一歩一歩進んで行くようです。
しかし怒りをコントロールすることはとても難しく、怒りによって多くの大切なものを失います。
非常に強く安定した精神状態の時でも、自分で十分コントロールしていると思い、表現として使ったつもりの小さな怒りでも、それを出すとみるみる自分の心が乱れ、コントロールを失っていくのが解ります。

「私たちは自分の苦しみの多くを自分の手で作っています。」

野町和嘉氏の写真が抜群に美しく、事象を切り出して表現しています。
一度読んだ後にこの本をちょっと手にとり、めくってみるだけで初心に帰り、水面のように静まった心を思い出せそうです。

ダライ・ラマの著書は沢山読みましたが、
これほど私の心を響いた本は他にありません。

ダライ・ラマのシンプルなメッセージが、
チベットの素朴で真剣な人々の写真を背景に、
真っ直ぐに心に落ちてきます。

難解な仏教の教義も、一般人が理解できない言葉もなく、
チベットの人々の表情が象徴するように、
愚直なまでに、やさしい言葉で人々の幸せを真剣に
訴えているからでしょう。

チベットの厳しい現実から目を逸らすことなく、
なお不屈の希望を持つダライ・ラマ。
仏教を超えて、一人の人間の生き様として、
是非多くの人に読んでもらいたい一冊です。
