　日本でも知られているあの有名な一枚の写真。そこに映っている６人の参戦前後の人生と、作者の父のその後が、淡々と語られている。
　アメリカ側からの視点なので、日本を冷酷非道に、悪く書かれているかと思っていたが、そんなことはなかった。
「ジャップ」「くたばれ日本」などの言葉もなかったことには、素直に安心できた(この本に単語として出てこなかったという意味で)。

各章の最初に、胸を打つ、あるいは納得する一言が載っているのだが、中でも「すべての戦争は少年っぽいものであり、少年達によって戦われるものである」
「戦争はひどいものでいい。さもないと、皆それを好きになってしまうから」の言葉には胸を打たれた。
そのとおりだ。アメリカ人だとか日本人だとか、関係ない。戦争は悲惨だ。
　
　硫黄島の共同墓地に誰かが残した言葉(１５章と後書きに出ている)は特に胸を打つ。
アメリカ兵のために、というだけではなく、この戦い、いやこの戦争で死んだ
すべての国のすべての兵士のために捧げられていい言葉だと思う。

　太平洋のこんなちっぽけな島でこんな激戦があって、多くの人が死んだ。
他にも特攻や空襲などで命を落とした人がたくさんいるという事実がある。
戦争にかっこいいも正義もない、あるのは空しさと悲惨さだけだということを
改めて考えさせられる一冊です。

この本は、元のヴァージョンがあって、それを若年層向けに書き直されたものです。
そのことへの注記が訳者後書きなどに、一切無いのはちょっとアンフェアかと。
翻訳クレジットを見ないとわかりません。
書き直されていない、元ヴァージョンの翻訳も出版されています。
『硫黄島の星条旗』（文春文庫）＊著者表記は本書と異なり、ジェームズ・ブラッドリーとなってます。偶然かもしれませんが、検索などにひっかかるのを防ぐ意図があるのかと、邪推してしまいます。

実際に硫黄島に星条旗を建てた6人の兵士。
レネ、ハーロン、フランクリン、アイラ、マイク、ジョン。
その内の一人「ジョン」の息子が書いた戦争本です。

6人の兵士の生い立ち、戦後の生活環境・・・
マスコミが作った虚像の英雄6人、戦争の美化、戦争費用集め・・・
実際の戦争の悲惨さが描かれています。

この本を読んで実感したことは、
戦争の無意味・悲惨。
日本軍って強かった。
日本の現在の腰抜け外交（ノーと言えない日本政府）。
