僕は、岡本太郎を誤解していた。昔、テレビのバラエティで見た印象しか覚えていなかったからだ。なんか、“変なおじさん”くらいにしか思ってなかった。

しかし、自分の生活が行き詰まり、書店でこの本を手にとって、一節一節を読んでいく内、熱い！なんて熱いんだ！って気持ちが、こちら側にも乗り移ってくる様な生命力を感じたんだ。

「逃げない、はればれと立ち向かう、それがぼくのモットーだ」
「負けた者こそバンザーイと、大いに胸を張ってにっこりする、これだよ」
「孤独感をもっているのはキミだけじゃない。人間全部が孤独感をもっている。」
「信念のためには、たとえ敗れるとわかっていても、おのれを貫く、そういう精神の高貴さがなくて、何が人間ぞとぼくはいいたいんだ。」

太郎氏の言葉に勇気付けられる。しかし、臆病で弱い僕は、また弱気になる。そしてまた、この書に勇気付けられる。そんなことを繰り返している日々である。

「いいかい、怖かったら怖いほど、逆にそこに飛び込むんだ。やってごらん」
何度この言葉に勇気を与えてもらったであろう。ボクが大切にしている太郎氏の言葉である。
人が、恐怖心を克服し逞しくなっていくには、畢竟、この言葉のごとく”怖いことに飛び込んでいく”という具体的な行動をしていくことなのだ。

この本は、さまざまな角度から勇気を与えてくれる。

たまたま本屋で見つけた新作本。買ってあっという間に読み終えました。と同時に久しぶりに胸がじんとなりました。彼の言葉は生きているそう強く感じました。今まで感じたことの無い気持ち。本の中から岡本太郎が私自身に向かって発している言葉の様に感じるそんな本です。岡本敏子さんが一生懸命彼の言葉をメモに取った言葉達がこの本の中に凝縮されているステキな1冊です。
