よしもとよしともの数少ない単行本のひとつにして、間違いなく代表作である。80年代、大学在学中にデビューして以来、彼はあまりにも寡作だった。最近はコミックキューやコミックＨなどでたまに原稿を描いているが、もしかすると、現在の本業は漫画家ではないのかもしれない。

正直言って、この作品をはじめ、彼の漫画の持つ空気感を説明するのは難しい。『完全自殺マニュアル』の鶴見済はこの作品に「５５％の前向き」というコピーを付けたが、これはなかなか当を得てると思う。
作中では、特にドラマは起こらず、何も解決しない。大きく前進もしない。かといって、完全に絶望しているわけでも、完全に冷め切っているわけではない。

彼が描こうとするものは時に焦燥であったり、感傷であったり、諦観であったりするのだが、嫌味のない画風と独特のテンポで、読後感は意外と爽やかだ。
ちなみに、表題の「青い車」というのはスピッツの楽曲から取られている。他に、フィッシュマンズの曲名が冠された短編もある。

作者は学生時代にニューウェーブバンドに入れこんでいた時期もあり、ロックミュージックへの複雑な想いは作品全体に通底している。
ロッキング・オンなどを読み漁った時期のあるかつての（現役でも可）文系バンド少年には、特におすすめしたい。

青春マンガである。 痛々しいわけではない。 悲しすぎるわけでもない。 でも、ここに流れる感情には、 決して冷酷ではないが、 どこか冷めた、諦めにも似た視点がある。 これが作者の視点なのか、それとも我々の視点なのかは分からない。 二十世紀の、そして二十一世紀に残る名作。

この漫画、ちょっとマニアックなものばかりを置いてあるお店で、何となく絵が気に入ったので買ってみた。
読んだ感想としては、純文学的な要素が強く、面白いと思える人とそうで無い人との差が生まれてくる漫画だと思う。
村上春樹を理解できるか、できないか、の違いみたいな。
とらえどころのない絵柄と話が独特で確かに面白くもあるが、逆に言えばその微妙な空気感に馴染めない人は辛いと思う。
村上春樹を読んで「結局何が言いたいわけ？」と思うタイプには（実は私もなのだが（笑））お勧めしない。
ちなみに私自信の感想としては、「嫌いじゃないけど特別面白いと思うわけでもない作品」と言う感じだろうか。
