「ファルマコン」。自殺志願者にとって読めば死へといざなってくれる毒薬にもなりうるし、逆に死にたくはないという自殺を止める薬にもなってくれるかもしれない。この本のせいで自殺が増えたとか、自殺がブームになったという人がいるかもしれないけれども、この本はあくまで「手段の案内役」に過ぎない。これまでの著書と違い、自殺の否定に言及していない点（自殺の自己決定権）、手段とケースがよく書かれている点では画期的なのかも。

薬の内容が古いという指摘は全くその通り。リオロンSなんてもう製造中止。アタラックスPは処方箋がないと買えないんじゃないのかな？初版が発行されてから、内容が改訂されていないようだし、それは仕方ありません。税抜き価格が1,165円、販売総数が100万部、印税が総販売の1割と仮定して、1億1,650万の印税収入。すげぇー。

この本のエッセンスって一番最初の「はじめに」ってところにあると思います。なんでこんなに自分の気持ちがわかってくれるんだろう。もしかしてこの人も同じ行為に走ることを考えたことがあるんじゃないか？なんて思わずにはいれませんでした。楽になれたというか、もうどうでもいいや、考えるのが疲れたという気持ちになれたのかな。同じことを考えて苦しまずにいられたとしたら、この本のおかげかも。今でも「はじめに」と「首吊り」に付箋が張り付けてあるけど、今は見る気がしない。

硫化水素発生させたり、練炭使ったり、集団自殺しようとする前に、一度くらい読んでみてもいいんじゃないのかな？それで死にたければ、それ以上何も言わないし。言いたかったのはそれだけ。最後まで読んでくれて、どうもありがとう。

本書は各種自殺についての
・手軽さや苦しみの度合い
・周囲への影響
・事後処理に関わる人々・金銭や時間
などが一部実例を踏まえ記載されてます。

他人に迷惑をかけずに死ぬことは不可能ですが
そのリスクを最小限に抑える方法を探すなら
参考程度にはなるでしょう。

衝撃的な前書きに始まりあらゆる自殺の方法の具体的な説明・データ、さらには実際に起きた事例が詳しく載っています。自分で死のうとしている人には参考になると思います。

一方で、逆にこの本を読んで思いとどまることもできるかも。前書きにあるように、この本を読んで「イザとなったら死んじゃえばいい」と思いながら、それで生き抜ける人も出てくるかも知れません。
読んだ人次第でどうにでも活用できる本だと思います。自殺する気がある人もない人も、一読の価値があると思います。
