原書は2005年出版。今年（2007年）はベルリン・フィル創立125周年だそうである。日本ではこれに合わせて出版されたことになる。表題も装丁も、いかにもお手軽本といった趣で、マニア層へのアピールという点では恐らくずいぶん損をしているだろう。しかし、原注もいっしょに読むと結構読み応えがあり、確かに５時間くらいはかかる。また、37枚の写真は少なくとも大半が初出と思われ、大変貴重である。

但し、一種のお祝い本であることには違いない。批判的な記述はまず出てこず、話題はNHKの早朝番組のように、平和・微温的に終始する。花形指揮者の話題が主体であることも、本書の口当たりのよさに貢献しているが、より深い事情を他書で知っている事柄については記述の浅さが気になり、初心者向け作品の限界と思われた。

残念ながら、本書の日本語訳はいただけません。直訳しただけのような、何とも不自然な文体が繰り返されています。原書のドイツ語の言い回しを、日本語特有の表現に置き換えるのは翻訳家としての責務ではないでしょうか。
また、本文が縦書きなのに対して、註が巻末にまとめて、しかも横書きで書かれているのも問題です。註を参照するたびに混乱してしまって、読むのに時間がかかります。できれば各章末ごとに註を割り振ってほしかったです。
