最初は、私も「ABC」だなんて、いかにも初心者向け、と舐めてた。
しかしその実態は、自家用操縦士の学科試験（航空工学・航空通信・航空法規・航空気象・空中航法）を、豊富な図や写真を用いて、網羅的に解説してある本格的な一冊だった。
例えば、キャブレター・アイシングの仕組みや、航空法施工規則、気団や温暖・寒冷前線、推測航法理論など、各科目のトピックスにも細かく触れられている。

長年、教鞭を取られてきた元航空大学校助教授監修なので、初学者が理解しにくいポイントを押さえて書かれている。正直、私が教科書として使った日本航空協会の「飛行機入門」よりも、分かり易かった。

もちろん、航空計算盤の使い方や、ナビゲーションの方法など、記述が不足する部分もあるが、本田航空の教本が一冊四千円近くするのを考えれば、本書は値段以上の価値があるだろう。

特筆すべきは、第二章の操縦マニュアル相当部分。約150枚のC172Pの機体・コクピット写真を用いながら、「実技試験」に相当する部分の解説が丁寧になされている。無論、実機での練習には及ばないし割愛されている部分もあるが、機体点検の順番やATCも忠実に再現されているので、本書を片手にフライトのイメージ・トレーニングを行うのもいいだろう。

本書だけで国家試験に挑むのは無謀だが、自家用操縦士の試験ってどんな内容？とか、航空協会のテキストの表現が硬すぎていまいち理解できない、という方、そして全国”100万人の”航空ファンにお勧めの一冊！
