　深町眞理子さんのエッセイ、というと、どうしたって翻訳の話を期待してしまう。翻訳した作品や日常についてのエッセイももちろん面白いのだけれど、やはり本書の目玉は「フカマチ式翻訳実践講座」。著者が自分なりの翻訳の仕方を実例に則して解説してくれている。詳細な翻訳技術の話もあれば、翻訳云々以前の思いっきり基本的なことまで書かれてあるので、何かにつけて読み返すとそのときどきの発見があります。
　それだけにこの「実践講座」が巻末付録みたいな扱いなのはもったいない。さら詳しく、さらにページ数をとってほしかった。

うらやましい彼女の生活。なんとなくそんな気がしました。
深町さんの訳本のリストもついていて、さらに翻訳教室がお勧め。
なるほどと思わせてくれます。

翻訳とはどういうものか？　エッセイと後ろはフカマチ式翻訳実践講座を通して丁寧に解説してくれる。ただ考え方が根本的に違うところをひとつ。 「ここで流行語をいっぱつカマせば、バツグンにぴったしキマると思っても、またそれでその人物の性格やその場の状況が、いかに効果的に表現できても、上記のような個所の書きかたでは、十年後、百年後まで残る（とすくなくとも訳者としては思いたい）文章としてはふさわしくあるまい」とはあんまり考えない。どちらかと言えば、走りながら一緒に走ってる人に話を伝えるような感覚の翻訳がほしいなぁ。止まってる人はいいやとまでは思わないけど、落としたものを拾うのは自由って感じ。走りながら伝える快感ってあると思ってて、翻訳では大部分がそういうものではないでしょうか？

きれいな日本語を伝えたいのなら、まずきれいな日本こそを伝えなきゃいけない気もするし...
