　男にとって母親の死は、精神的成長や深化の契機にもなるが、精神的荒廃のきっかけにもなりかねないという。この本には、息子の視点から母親の死を描いた14編のエッセイがおさめられている。「親というものは、亡くなってからも、子供の頭のなかで幻となって、いつまでも子供の人生を形成し、指図するものだ」という一節がしめすように、どのエッセイにも、そうした母親との葛藤が感じられる。

　アンドルー・サルモンは、卵巣癌にかかった母親が安楽死を決意し、それを実行するまでを描いている。アップダイクは「いつが最後の見舞いか」という題名で、老いた母親を書いた二つの文章を並べている。「お母さんっ子」「僕は何者だ。僕は母の魂だ」「わが内なる母」「これも母殺しか」「ママ」と題名をならべてみるだけでも、おおよその内容は察せられると思う。おっと、最後にこれもいれなければ「死ぬのは楽ではない」。

　原作（our mothers'spirits）は、「若くして亡くなった母」とか「後悔」「疎遠」といった項目ごとに編集されて、この三倍の量（４２編）がある。アメリカ的な人生観のしからしむるものか、ここには感傷はあるが、感傷的なものはない。母親を亡くした経験をもつ男にとっては、もういちど自分の経験を深化させる契機ともなるだろう。あるいは女性が読めば、男にとっていかに母親の存在が大きいか、あらためて認識しなおすのではないか。

本書を読むと必ず母親の記憶がよみがえります。

私は母親を癌でなくしましたが、
本書「母の魂」を読むと、
その記憶がはきりと思い出されるのです。

実は母を見送った後、
父親もなくなりましたが、
母親の死の方がダメージが明らかに大きかったです。
父には悪いと思うが事実。
本書には母親を失うことの悲しみ、喪失が書かれています。
アメリカ人の生死観は日本人と異なりますが、
母親の存在は世界共通だです。
本書を読んでの存在の大きさ、亡くしたときの喪失感の大きさに気づきました。

アップダイクの短編が収録されていますが、
最後の一行が効きます。
