13年にわたりドバイを中心にＵＡＥ（アラブ首長国連邦）で仕事をしている著者による、アラブ現地事情。
題名からアラブの大富豪の紹介本かと思って買いましたが、どちらかというとアラブビジネスについての本です。
同じアジアに属しながら、中東となると、オイルマネー、イスラム教、大富豪と、紋切り型で見ていたな、と本書を読み終わって思いました。

アラブ＝大富豪というイメージがあるのに、実は世界長者にランクインしている大富豪はあまりいない。それはなぜか、という話から、アラブ式ビジネスマナー（ええーー！と思うような話あり）や、笑える勘違い満載のアラブ人の日本観など、著者の実体験に基づくエピソードが面白いです。
そして、インターネットの普及により急速に変わりつつあるアラブに対し、いつまでもアメリカというフィルターを通してしかアラブを見ようとしない日本が、中国、韓国、台湾などに抜かれつつある現状に警告を鳴らしています。

ドバイで仕事をしようとしている人でなくても、面白く読めると思います。

最近、マスメディアで中東のドバイなどがオイルマネーの大富豪といった話題で取り上げられるようになってきました。
本書はそういったドバイをメインに庶民の暮らしぶりや習慣からビジネスに至る中東事情についてざっくばらんに説明しています。
なかでも日本人はいまだに”ハラキリ”をする民族であるとの認識があるとのことです。
また、接待を受け、”スシ”と言えば、マグロがまるごと一匹が出てきたことがあったとのこと。
中国や韓国といった諸外国は、早々と中東路線を繰り広げており、航路の確保、両国で認知度が高まるようマスメディアも活性化しているようです。
しかしながら、日本はビジネス上の中東路線を含め後発となっており、マスメディアからの中東情報はアメリカというフィルターを通した形でしか伝わってこないのが実情らしいです。
そのため、日本から見た中東はアラビアンナイトの世界であり、政情や治安不安定というイメージが強く、また中東から見た日本もおかしな民族といった認識を持たれているという次第です。
今後は両国の認知度が高まるよう、こういった本が数多く出版されることを期待します。

学術的価値は低いのかもしれないが
実際に向こうでビジネスを行っている筆者による
大変興味深い現地事情本。

筆者が出会ったアラブ人ビジネスマンたちが
はたして標準形なのか良く分からないが
先方に自宅で食事を採りながら、夜中まで延々と続く雑談に耐え、
ようやく商談にまでこぎつけるくだりなどは
経験者ならではの貴重な証言であろう。

文章も平易で、さらりと読めて
しかし実は奥深い一冊。
