運動神経が鈍い、普通の女の子ベラと
不思議な能力を持つ吸血鬼・エドワードの
ロマンティックサスペンス。

母親の再婚を機に、実の父が暮らす小さな田舎町に
ひっこすことになったベラ。
そこには田舎町には似合わない美貌のカレン一家が住んでいた。
けれどカレン家の末息子・エドワードは
ベラを理不尽に避けたり、近づいてきたりし。。。

2005年に出版された新書の文庫化です。
文庫の表紙は洋書と同じでシックにまとまっています。
アメリカではシリーズで500万部突破、映画化もきまっており
日本でも新書はこの種の翻訳書にしては異例の売れ行きだと思います。
翻訳も違和感のない日本語でいいし、
ストーリーがめちゃくちゃおもしろい。
ベラやエドワードたち登場人物もすごく魅力的です。

アメリカでは大人気のこのシリーズ。
日本語訳は読んではいないので日本語版のニュアンスはわからないのですが、大学時代に英文学を専攻した作者だけあって、プロットの中にもクラシックな作品（例えば、シェイクスピアやエミリー・ブロンテなどの作品）が練りこまれています。なので、登場人物の人物関係やストーリー展開にも面白みが増していると思います。
そういった意味では、典型的な今時のティーンズ小説より、ちょっと『クラス』のある内容だと思いました。
どこかクラシカルな雰囲気のあるストーリーを好まれる方にはオススメです。

上ではヴァンパイヤというより、エドワートとベラの出会いから心の変化が描かれています。
特に最初は謎だらけの無機質なエドワートがベラのおかげでだんだん人間らしくなっていく過程が描かれています。

映画ではハリーポッターでセドリックをやっていた彼がエドワートで、パニックルームで娘役をやっていた女の子がベラです。映画化への期待をこめて星を4つにしました。
