前著の「酷道をゆく」に続いて、
日本中から選りすぐった、走行の困難な国道（酷道）が
取り上げられています。

今回は、
　国道488号・・・裏匹見峡へ向かう断崖絶壁の峡路。
　国道371号・・・国道425号とともに紀伊半島を代表する酷道。
　　　　　　　　 ２箇所の分断区間、高野山へ向かう峡路、高野町〜かつらぎ町の峡路、
　　　　　　　　 古座川町の分断区間近くなど酷な要素がもりだくさん。
　国道388号・・・国道265号とともに九州を代表する酷道。椎葉村も通る。
　国道490号・・・マスコミにも取り上げられた対向困難な狭路。
　国道309号・・・旧行者還林道
　国道494号・・・四国の知られざる国道
などの国道が取り上げられています。（全部で１２本）

またそれと同時に、
　・酷道初心者むけの”入門酷道”、
　・国道につきものの峠
　・整備が進んで姿を変えたかつての酷道
　・通ることができなくなった廃道
　・酷道とは対極の首都高
などさまざまな道に関するトピックスが取り上げられていて、

写真撮影にハマりだした数年前、例えば廃村や廃墟などを探し求めて「酷道」、もとい国道や、「険道」、もとい県道をよくクルマで走り回ったものだった。
さてこの雑誌も２巻目となった。付録のＤＶＤにはその酷道を車窓から楽しめる様になっている。ただ、普通のクルマの約1.5倍くらいのスピードで早回しになっているので、まるでユハ・カンクネンや故・コリン・マクレーといったラリーストのコ・ドライバーを勤めているかの様な感格になってしまい、じっと見続けていると気持ちが悪くなるだろうし、興味の無い向きには「どこが面白いの？」とすぐに飽きてしまうかもしれない。しかし、もし自分がこの道を走ったならば、二度と行きたくなくならないかもしれない。でも、何か探検気分というか人間の内面にある怖いもの見たさがこういった道へと誘われるのだろう。まさに「三つ子の魂百まで」である。願わくばこれを冬柴国土交通大臣に見てもらいたいものである。
