全国あまねく広がっている国道の中でも、整備状況がひどかったり、
そもそも道の体をなしていないような道を"酷"道として取り上げて
います。

酷道マニアのなかでも、評価の高い（あくまで酷道としてですが）、
　・国道418号
　・国道425号
　・国道439号
などや
　・国道477号：百井別れ（180度の切り返しで有名）
　・国道339号：階段国道
　・国道289号：登山道国道
などの、変わった特徴のある国道が多数取り上げられ、
また、酷道走行のための心得なども触れられており、
一風変わったドライブガイドとして使用できるでしょう。

また、酷道という観点から離れても、これらの道が通過する
地域は景色の素晴らしい"穴場的な観光スポット"であること
も多く、そういう意味でも本書で紹介された道は訪れる者を
魅了してやまないでしょう。
（酷道を走るのに必死でそれどころでないかもしれませんが。）

私は国道101号を実際に毎日のように車で通っていたのですが、
この本に101号線が載っているのを見て、「おお、やっぱりそうか」と少し喜んでしまった。
載っている写真を「ああ、ここか」、「ここは分かりづらいよな･･･」と思いつつ読みふけりました。
そこで感じたのは、この本を本当に楽しみ尽くすには、その道を知っていてこそだということです。
単純に地図で普段行かないような所を見て楽しむような楽しみ方も出来ますが、
その道を走ってみてこそ本当の楽しさを知ることができるのだと思います。
一つ難点を言えば、各国道の紹介ページにある地図が北が上じゃないうえに、
どっちが北なのかも表示していないので、実際に地図で見ようとしても分かりづらくて困っちゃいました。
酷なのを分かっていて、つい行きたくなってしまう魅惑の一冊です。

これまで免許もないので道路には興味がなかったのですが、偶然この本を買って酷道ジャンルに目覚めました。
動画にはさすがに劣りますが、天下の国道にこんなすごい道がある！というインパクトと、それぞれの個性が十分楽しめます。もっと深いことを知りたい人なら、これをもとに地図やネットで資料を集めて自分で行くこともできるでしょう。
まずは酷道の世界に足を踏み入れる入門書として非常によい本だと思います。
