著者初のエッセイ集。作者を志した動機から，会社勤めのエピソード，旅行記に至るまで幅広い内容である。面白い物語を書く作者は，どのような話を書いても面白いものであり，人の前で読んでいて，思わず『ニヤリ』としてしまい，多少恥ずかしい気持ちになった。個人的には「技術の時間」「FantasticFactory2」「マジカルミステリーツアー」などがお気に入りであった。しかし，この作者若い頃，どれだけ海外を旅行しているんだろう？と思い，プロフィールを見ると，1976年生まれ･･･年下かよ！･･･恐るべしである。

万城目さん、初のエッセイ集。
抱腹絶倒かと思いきや、
そうでもなく・・・・。
しかし、奥の深いエッセイ集だ。

色んな雑誌・メディアからのエッセイなので
統一感がなく、
話題も様々な方向へとんで行くのだけれど、
章立てにしてあって
章ごとの内容は統一感もあり、
すっきり読めます。
特に旅の章は面白かったです。

「鴨川ホルモー」いかにして書くようになったのか？とか
モンゴルでのトナカイとの出会いが「鹿男あをによし」に通じているとか、
なかなか興味を引かれる話もたくさんありました。

あ、でもゴキブリとの奮闘話がサイコーだったかも。

文体はいつもの万城目さんらしく、
決してイマドキの言葉遣いだったりはしないんだけど、
そこがまたよかったりするんだな。

『鴨川ホルモー』が世に出た時は、知らない出版社に知らない新人賞だったし、かなり胡乱な目付きで本の売れ行きを見守っていたが、認知度が上がってようやく読んでみたらかなり面白かったと同時に、良いものを見逃していた自分の度量の無さを痛感しました。
で、万城目学の初エッセイが出たのを知り早速読んでみたのですが、出所がバラバラなので、エッセイも幼年期の話だったり、ゴキブリの話だったりと夢想するがごとくエピソードが飛んでいるのですが、『鴨川ホルモー』で見られた明治の文豪のような文体は健在でした。森見登美彦に酷似している文体はそのうちカラーが違ってくるとは思いますが、今のところ相似形を成して並んでいるかのようです。
出来れば作家デビューするまでの雌伏の期間をもうちょっとつまびらかにして頂けると嬉しかったです。
